Fiona Dickson
Memorial Trust
Registered Charity No: 1002652
History & Aims of the Trust
The Trust was created in March 1991 by Fiona's parents in memory of their daughter who was a GP trainee who died of cancer on 13 August 1989. The Trust was registered with the Charity Commissioners on 25 April 1991.
The aim of the Charity is to promote education and training for individuals wishing to improve their skills and knowledge, especially in palliative care within the United Kingdom and Africa.
One of Fiona's particular interests was improving the quality of life of the terminally ill and in her memory the Trust sponsors those willing to educate themselves in palliative care. The Trust has awarded bursaries to hospital-based nurses, Macmillan nurses, lay counsellors, medical staff and has also organised palliative care study days. Applications are judged on their individual merit with attention paid to motivation, career plans, personal and financial circumstances as well as the nature of the intended training.
During her illness Fiona wrote a booklet describing her experience of cancer and offering practical hints and tips for fellow sufferers and their families. After Fiona's death in 1989 the booklet was published and circulated widely. The booklet is copyright free and can be either downloaded from our website or a request can be made for a copy.
Since its creation in 1991 the Trust has received substantial donations from all around the world including the film industry and in memory of Dr John Cosgrove, a GP who died of cancer.
St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice was asked to take over the administration of the Trust in 2009 and will continue to honour Fiona's memory by ensuring grants are made available to those wishing to further their education in palliative care.
