Drop your items into one of our Charity Shops (addresses below)

Charity shops - the myths exposed

Myth 1: The clothes sold in charity shops are dirty or inferior quality All clothing is hygienically prepared to ensure they are clean, fresh and mended before they are hung on the shelves.

Firstly, any repairs are carried out. This could include replacing buttons, changing zips, re-hemming an item etc. Then they are steamed. If the quality is not up to scratch the item is classed as 'rag'. The rag is sold so that every item donated makes money for the Hospice.

Myth 2: The charity shops only sell clothing.

Would you consider having a look in a charity shop for an antique? Why not? Antiques are donated to St Barnabas on a regular basis. A qualified valuer assesses each piece, be it jewellery, clocks, vases and more, to ensure the best price is obtained. Each October we hold an Antiques Sale at the Assembly Rooms in Lincoln.

The shops also sell a lot of household goods, books, puzzles and games, toys and small pieces of furniture. We also employ a qualified electrician who tests and ensures that our electrical goods are fit and safe to sell and pass legal requirements.

Myth 3: Charity shops don't make a lot of money because of their low prices.

It's true; most items in a charity shop represent a huge saving because of their low prices. But the profits really add up.

Fifteen St Barnabas Hospice charity shops raised £150,000 in 2002/ 03. This is profit that is put back into the Hospice. The shops operate with a large quantity of voluntary staff, enabling costs to be kept to a minimum.
